Seasonal Vaccines
Which Vaccines for Respiratory Illnesses Are Recommended?
Staying current with seasonal vaccines is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications. Here’s what the CDC recommends for 2024–2025:
Flu Vaccine
Who should get it: Everyone 6 months and older, annually.
Benefits: Reduces the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and flu-related death.
Especially important for:
People at higher risk of flu complications (older adults, young children, those with chronic health conditions)
Pregnant women, since a flu shot protects both mother and baby for about 6 months after birth
People with heart disease, as flu vaccination lowers risk of serious cardiac events
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
Infants & Young Children:
Protection can come from maternal vaccination (Pfizer’s Abrysvo, given at 32–36 weeks of pregnancy)
Or nirsevimab antibody injection for babies at birth or before RSV season
Some children 8–19 months at high risk may also receive nirsevimab
Older Adults:
Single RSV vaccine dose recommended for adults 75+
Adults 60–74 may receive it if at increased risk for severe RSV disease
No need for another dose if you received it last year

Why Seasonal Vaccines Matter
Every fall and winter, respiratory illnesses like COVID-19, influenza (flu), and RSV become more widespread. These illnesses can range from mild to severe and, for some people, may lead to hospitalization or even life-threatening complications. Vaccines offer the strongest protection available, helping to reduce the spread of disease, lessen symptoms if you do get sick, and protect vulnerable members of your family and community.
By staying up to date on seasonal vaccines, you are:
Lowering your risk of severe illness and hospitalization
Reducing the chance of missing work, school, or travel due to illness
Helping protect babies, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems who are more likely to develop serious complications

Seasonal Vaccine FAQs
Why Get an Updated COVID-19 Vaccine?
Over time, protection from COVID-19 vaccines naturally decreases. Because the virus that causes COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) is constantly evolving, updated vaccines are designed to give you the best protection against the strains that are currently circulating. The 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccines are formulated to help reduce your risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications from the latest variants.
Are the Vaccines Available Now?
Yes. At Nowobilska Medical Practice, we currently offer:
Flu vaccines
Updated COVID-19 vaccines
RSV vaccines for older adults
For infants, the RSV antibody nirsevimab will be available starting October 1. Supplies continue to expand each week, and we’ll help you schedule your child’s immunization as soon as it’s available.
When Is the Best Time to Get My Vaccines?
Respiratory virus season usually begins in October and peaks between December and March. We recommend scheduling your vaccines in the fall to make sure you’re protected throughout the winter months. However, respiratory illnesses can spread any time of year—so if you haven’t received your updated vaccines yet, it’s never too late to get protected.
Where Can I Get My Vaccines?
You can receive your recommended seasonal vaccines right here at Nowobilska Medical Practice in Oak Lawn and Chicago. Our team is committed to making the process safe, professional, and convenient.
We also partner with local pharmacies and community health clinics if additional support is needed.
What About Cost?
For most patients, seasonal vaccines are covered by insurance at no cost. This includes flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines.
Medicare patients: No out-of-pocket cost for adult vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
Medicaid patients: Most vaccines are fully covered.
Children (18 and younger): Eligible for free vaccines through the Vaccines for Children Program.
Uninsured adults: Additional funding is available this season to cover COVID-19 vaccines. Ask our office staff, and we’ll guide you through your options.
Can I Get All My Vaccines in the Same Visit?
Yes. Flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines can all be given at the same appointment. If it’s easier for you to get everything done at once, we’ll make sure you’re fully protected in a single visit.
If you prefer to space them out, that’s okay too—there’s no required waiting period between these vaccines.
While you’re here, we can also check if you’re due for other important vaccines, such as those for pneumonia, shingles, or whooping cough (Tdap).
What Else Can I Do to Protect Myself This Season?
Vaccines are your best defense, but there are other simple steps you can take to reduce your risk of illness:
Stay home if you feel unwell
Practice regular handwashing and good hygiene
Improve indoor air quality when possible
Consider masking in crowded or high-risk settings
Test when symptoms appear, especially for COVID-19 and flu
At Nowobilska Medical Practice, we’re here to help you stay healthy through every season. If you have questions about which vaccines are right for you or your family, talk with Dr. Anna Nowobilska or a member of our care team.
